I Love Music and I Have Always Wanted to Play an Instrument - I, However, Am Not Musically Inclined

Expert Author Cindy SamuelsonI have always wanted to be able to play a musical instrument. I truly love music and playing an instrument has always been a dream of mine. Music is very special and it soothes the soul. Music is inspirational.

My desire to play an instrument started when I was very young.

My gramma had a small electric organ. I used to go to her house after school and I would play on it for hours. It had the colored keys and notes and I thought I was a real star.

While I did enjoy going to my gramma's, learning to play the guitar was my first instrument choice. I was mesmerized by friends who could sing and play. I could sit and listen to them for hours on end. I finally got my first guitar when I was about 13. I took classes from a local music teacher. Although the class was good, it wasn't for me. I was very self-conscious and I didn't like trying to play in front of the people who actually caught on. Throughout the years, I did try many different courses that you could purchase. There was no such thing as online back in those days. I tried for years to learn to play the guitar but it just didn't happen.

Next, I joined the high school choir. Unfortunately, although I do love to sing, I can't carry a tune. Basically, in choir, I just mouthed the words. I desperately wanted to be a part of the choir. Since it was a small school, they let me get by with just being a body. They actually asked me not to sing!
My brother had played the trumpet in band. We still had the trumpet so I thought that I'd give it a try. Heck, I wasn't even very proficient in reading music. I did stay in band but I ended up having to memorize all the songs that we played. We had a marching band and we always went to competitions. We were pretty good. The band instructor was tolerant of me but he instructed me to NOT try to hit any high notes. I was pretty hopeless.

Like me, many people can't read music. These people can often play music by ear. My mom was one of these. She was an actress at heart and she could play the piano strictly by ear. She would hear a song and then she was able to play it. I was pretty amazed and I was also a little jealous.
Many
people do have the natural ability that it requires to play an instrument and sing. They are musically inclined and it really is easy for them. It is a 'gift'. It's a gift, which I finally admitted, that I don't have. Not everyone is a natural but you shouldn't let that stop you. With all the courses online, a true desire, and bulldog determination, anyone can succeed in becoming a musician.

I'm going to take another stab at the guitar. I'll never be a super star and I will never play in front of people but at least, perhaps, I can sooth my own soul.

Check these courses out and become the envy of all your friends.

Rise of Music Streaming Service - Spotify

Over the past decade we have seen music streaming services in the industry rise tremendously. The idea of music streaming services is to bring you millions of songs, of all genres, for whatever situation you land yourself in. Streaming services have forced big players like iTunes to follow in their path or unfortunately get left behind. Streaming websites argue they are contributing positively to the industry with the underlying fact that music seems to be growing again. But like anything else in this world where there is ups, unfortunately, there must be downs and for streaming websites this has certainly been the case, especially over the last couple of year.

Music streaming sites in general all operate in similar ways. The majority allows consumers to use their service for free, with the downside of having to listen to advertising in between songs, but also have a paid version of the service, where you pay a set price per month or year, and draw in little to no interruption. Streaming services, in short, have banks of music from a wide range of artists and genres where customers are usually allowed to customize their own profiles with any music they choose, create playlists of their own and use the services radio setting where they curate songs for you. Before music streaming services started booming, paying a set price for a single song on iTunes and uploading it on your device seemed to be the most traveled path. In today's age it is clear that streaming services are taking over, from movies to music, streaming seems to be the most efficient way of operating. There are many streaming services to choose from in our day and age, such as, Pandora, Google Music, Amazon Prime Music, Apple Music, etc. But I want to focus on the player that has impacted the industry the most, or so it seems, Spotify.

Spotify, founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, launched in 2008 in hopes of changing the way we listen to music forever. Along with most streaming services, Spotify allows you to search any artist, track, album, genre or playlist to find exactly what you're looking for. Spotify also allows you to "follow" your friends and artists in the industry to see what they're listening to. Spotify partnered up with Facebook where users with Spotify accounts could choose an option where the recent songs they listened to would pop up on their Facebook profile. In my opinion this was Spotify's best decision as far as growing their service. Today, Spotify has 1,500 employees, 75+ millions users, music available in 50+ languages and is available in an application form on almost every platform.

How to Pack for a Festival Adventure

You want to be lightweight and move around with ease, but you also want to have everything you need right? This article will be your guide to successfully learning how to pack and pack correctly for the days adventure at the festival. First and fore most, you are going to need a camelback. Camelbacks are essentially a backpack with a big pouch for water.

During blistering hot temperatures, and being on the move for 10+ hours of the day you are going to want to be prepared and have plenty water at the ready. Once you have your pouch of water secured, now it is time to think of other items you should place in the camelback. Secondly I would think to put some kind of tapestry or a blanket of some sorts along with you. Since there are no physical seats in the festival you are going to want to stay comfy instead of sitting on the dirt. Also, laying a tapestry or blanket on the ground will also let you claim some space in what will most certainly be a crowded stage when the show starts. After a blanket, you should look into bringing some kind of extra clothing. Especially if you do not plan on stopping back at the campsite, some extra clothing is essential when the sun goes down and the temperatures drop. The last thing you want to do is be uncomfortably cold and have to walk back to the campsite that is a half hour away. The last items to put in your backpack are small things such as your ticket, sunglasses, and possibly a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

The next important piece you should bring with you for the day is a fanny pack. Fanny packs are a crucial part to packing for a festival that not that many people know about. Fanny packs allow access to very essential things that you will need throughout your day, that you are not going to want to take your backpack off for. (Especially during the headliner shows that make it difficult to take the backpack off due to the sheer amount of people). Not only is the fanny pack very fashionable in the festival world, it also carries great value. The maneuverability is very key, especially because one can just simply move the pack to their backside if it is every getting in their way. Key items that you should consider keeping in your fanny pack would be: chap stick, gum, candy, hand sanitizer, a bandana, cigarettes, lighter, wallet, ID, festival band, spare keys, and giving tree items. Now I know some of you are saying, that's easy and I already knew most of that. But now we are going to move on to an aspect of packing for a festival that most people really slack in.

Here is my call to action for all of you heading to a festival this season! Pack heavy, and pack correctly. Pack only things that you will need, and pack enough items.

The worst thing you can have happen is to forget a bunch of things and then you have to spend all your money buying those items once you get into festival grounds. Also pack correctly, bring items for the weather, every kind of weather!

Ten Songs That Make the Perfect Soundtrack For Your Retirement

Expert Author Doug PoeI recently joined the world of retired folks, and I can definitely say that it beats working. Obviously I cannot speak for everyone, but having to rise at 5:00 every morning to face six classes of thirty high school students really took its toll.

Retirement has certainly been a welcome change after thirty years as an English teacher. The free time has allowed me to indulge in one of my favorite obsessions, which is music.
During my zealous listening over the past few months, I have experienced a new appreciation for songs that speak directly to retirees. Here are ten of those songs that should be appreciated by all those who have retired from a long career of working.
"Watching the Wheels" by John Lennon
The genius behind the best songs of The Beatles reflects on his retirement from the music world on this solo track from the Double Fantasy album, which ironically marked a return to the business shortly before he was assassinated.

"Idle By" by Travis Bretzer
The indie artist is too young to fully appreciate the beautiful idleness of retirement, but his gorgeous song from Waxing Romantic will take on a new meaning for him by the time senior organizations start sending him mail.

"Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett
It is more suited for those retirees headed to the beach, but any of us can identify with the serenity of "Strumming my six string on my front porch swing."

"Retirement" by Kaiser Chiefs
This title track and its album mates served as appropriate follow ups to the indie rock band's debut, Employment. Thankfully, the band went back to work and released three more records after that.
"Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding
The whistling at the end of this classic provides a perfect soundtrack for those of us who have earned our break from the rat race.

"School's Out" by Alice Cooper
As a teacher, this title track and classic rock anthem has a completely new meaning in retirement.
"I'm Free" by the Who
Roger Daltrey in the role of Tommy in the rock opera is hang gliding during this tune, but even with my feet firmly on the ground I can appreciate its thrill.
"Carefree Highway" by Gordon Lightfoot
I have only been on it for a year, but so far this avenue on the Sundown album is the best route I have travelled.

"I've Had Enough" by Paul McCartney and Wings
This track from the Londontown album is a must listen for anyone who is fed up with work, highlighted by the line "You stand behind me with a watch in your hand and I can't get nothing done."

"Permanent Vacation" by Five Seconds of Summer
This happy title comes from Sounds Good Feels Good, the Australian rock band's second album.

Why I Love Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith

Expert Author Andrea L LaneIt was a cold day in Los Angeles, if you can believe that... My life in L.A. had been rough and I was in a place where life wasn't so great. I had been told about a spiritual center that could get me on the right path. I was willing to try anything. With my hair in tiny braids all over my head and my rock n roll outfit, I made my way to Agape (now known as Agape International Spiritual Center) in Santa Monica. I wasn't sure what I would find but I had been told about the center more than once. As I made my way through the chilly streets, I had a feeling inside. This was a feeling that I was on the right track. Was it guidance? Was it my guardian angel? As a musician, I had experienced altered realities but I wasn't really sure of any of it. Arriving in the moderately sized building, I noticed right away that this was a very diverse community. Phew... being raised in Kentucky where we all had blonde hair and blue eyes (well, almost), I actively was seeking out multi-colored, multi-faceted communities. I sat next to a beautiful lady named Brenda Lee Eager who told me of her mother's passing. I was all teary eyed even before the Rev. came on stage.

But then he appeared. I literally felt like he materialized from thin air onto the stage (but I digress). He began speaking quickly and intelligently about a power and a presence within all of us that could turn our lives from sad and hopeless to joyful and miraculous. He began speaking things that I had thought all along but was never sure of... He began to shake my core essence into a powerful vibration that I didn't know was within me. I felt powerful, magical and free for a second. A second! That's all it took, for I was completely amazed with his message. I was amazed with his connection to all of us seated in the room but more importantly, his connection with Source. It was as if God was speaking right through him and directly to me.

That's power! While some of the things I didn't understand yet, I knew I had to come back again and again... that was over 20 years or so ago. He would teach of unconditional love, forgiveness, compassion, grace, meditation, prayer, yoga, right nutrition and right action. He would teach of letting go, stepping out on faith, trusting inner guidance, freedom, love for all beings and more. Basically, he became my forever guru. And the inspirational music that filled the room only added to this feeling of freedom. The music was so compelling that I found myself singing along to songs I didn't even know. I found that the music became almost as powerful as the message... or that they were really one in the same. Yes, they were the same and they blew me right out of my seat.
